Changing times               from Howard Jarrold

It's ALL CHANGE time. Two thirds of you either go on holiday or play outdoors and those of us that carry on indoors have the luxury of uncrowded rinks and playing with three woods. This year we have the huge advantage of playing on the new carpet which is due to be laid at the end of May. Make no mistake, both line and weight will differ from the present. As to how much will depend on lots of factors and there is no point in speculating, other than to say the carpet will probably play heavier and with less bias. So we have three months to get used to it. That means practice.
Get into a set routine when you practice, which starts with standing on the mat relaxed and fully focused. Decide which way you are going, take your grip , turn your entire body and face along the line that you have selected. Your shoulders , hips and feet should all be parallel. Now adjust your feet with the leading foot facing along the line.
I harp on about line but it really is the one thing that is not negotiable. Why? Because the woods have a bias which means that they can only travel along a set path. However far they travel the arc along which the bias dictates they go, will always be constant. At about two thirds along the way the bowls begin to lose velocity and the bias comes into play. S-e-e-mple say the meerkats. Once you have the line s- e -e-mply deliver along that line and hey presto you hold 2 shots.
When you get to try the new carpet, do so with a friend. Get him or her to send your woods down with you watching from a point about two thirds along the line, and observe the point at which your woods turn and head for the pot. Commit to memory and let your brain work out the line and weight needed with the new surface. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR WOODS until you've given the new surface a try.
Inside or out, have a good summer. I am available inside only and am only too pleased to help.
Howard
P.S. Yet again I am being asked to mention that some members are walking up and down the walkways with no thought for the bowlers trying to bowl. IF THE CAP FITS -----PLEASE OBSERVE THE UNWRITTEN RULE AND STAND STILL-----
