One person's thoughts               from Howard Jarrold

Below I copy a reply to my little questionnaire. What do you think ? Reply hjarrold@gmail.com

Hi Howard,

Comments as requested:

1. Is etiquette as important in today's world as it was ?

No – In my experience many clubs take the view that they must keep the game as it has always been and resist any suggestions of change. The clubs that encourage different ideas and are willing to modernise the game within their clubs are attracting new and younger members and will continue to grow.

2. Are standards falling ?

Yes

3. Assume a yes to 2. Does it matter that much ?

This may not be a negative thing as this may have the effect of attracting more players into clubs but this needs to be managed by the clubs.

4. Do you think it contributes to the perception of the game as being a game to play when you are older ?

Absolutely – You only have to look how the game of cricket has reinvented itself to see the benefits of relaxing rules and encouraging change to attract a younger and more diverse membership.

-------------------
A mish mash of questions which covers attitude, behaviour as well as standards

1. Do you think we should wear grey/whites all the time. ? After all we have to wear shirt/trousers so why not grey/whites

No – It is not necessary and gives the perception to potential bowlers of old people all dressed the same and would be off putting to many. Bringing colour into the club will always attract younger players (shirts or bowls).

2 Would it matter if jeans and shorts were allowed ?

No if it attracts younger members.

3.Wearing of hats indoors should not be allowed

I Disagree

4. High fives are now common place where once it was frowned on. Do you approve of fist pumping and noisy celebration ?

I would encourage players to make some noise and get involved more in game play – good natured banter should be encouraged.

5. Do you think it matters if you celebrate a missed shot ?

Yes - unsportsmanlike

6. Does it matter if Numbers 1 and 2 in a match get involved in deciding -- ---
the score ?

OK to have a discussion between team players but should be decided by No 3s

7.Would it matter if handshakes were restricted to skips only ?

No

8. Does it matter if players argue on court and try to influence skips ?

I would encourage all team members to contribute – the idea that front end players should keep quiet is outdated. However the contributions should be positive not negative. This should led by the skip

9. In this day and age where blazers , collar and tie are regarded by many as
the uniform of an out of touch elite. Do you agree that is how they are seen ?

Yes – not necessary.

10. If Q9 is yes would you vote to relax dress code a. For committees
b. For players

Yes for both

Kind Regards,

Steve Traynor
