Are you a one handed bowler from Howard Jarrold
|
Should you be as competent with forehand as with backhand ? If, as a coach I pontificate about being as good on one hand as the other, I will receive a lot of flak from those who answer ' It doesn't matter. It is up to the individual.' My view is that if you can play either, then your skip will be a happy skip, but if you can't then life is more difficult and that can lead to difficulties within teams. So, is the answer yes or no ? I say yes. There is no reason at all why you should not be as good with one as the other simply because they are both played the same way. Stand on the mat, feet shoulder width apart, bowl in hand hanging down by your side and looking down at the jack. Now imagine the bowl alongside the jack and imagine it moving back towards you. Note where the shoulder of the turn is ( bias ). Shuffle your feet, hips and shoulders ( all together as one ) round until you are facing that point and your arm swings easily to and fro along the line from you to the shoulder of the turn. Now deliver the bowl along that imaginary line of the bowl coming back towards you. Make sure that you are looking along the delivery line at the point of delivery and not at the jack. Now do exactly the same on the other hand and hey presto ! It is as simple as that. Note that the delivery line is not the same on the backhand as the forehand. Adjust according to where your wood comes to rest. As a guide for weight, remember that the bowl travels 2/3rd of the total length in a ‘ straight ‘ line and the final 1/3rd is the bias turn to the jack. Try bowling to the point that the wood turns for home. It won’t happen overnight so keep trying Howard
